I first encountered David Hockney's paintings on a work trip to London, strolling through the Tate on a weekend and colliding with A Bigger Splash (1967). It's the most impactful of his pools I've seen since: flat expanses of acrylic, no clouds, no people, and a splash painstakingly laid onto the canvas over two weeks painting with tiny brushes, capturing 'two seconds of chaos rendered in slow motion'. If you have a chance, find some of his weiner dog series, it's incredible. Hockney embraced technology as a medium later in his career, showing entire series of ipad paintings at the Royal Academy.
